The IK parameter is used to determine the degree of protection of the device against external impacts. According to many experts, it is more accurate than popular droptests (droptests do not have default standards) and better specifies the resistance of equipment to mechanical damage.
The classification itself is defined in European Standard EN 62262 and its international equivalent, IEC 62262:2002, which only confirms the reliability of the indications. Perhaps in the future it will be the standard for resistance characteristics for devices such as smartphones. The parameter is used more and more frequently by industrial and installation companies, among others, to describe specialized products such as: cameras, receivers or external installations. They shall be marked as ‘vandal-proof’. ( Resistant to strokes, e.g. vandals ).
IKXY’s mechanical resistance is determined by the letters IK and eleven-degree level (from “00” for no protection, to “10” for 20J impact resistance). Naturally, the higher the numerical value of the parameter at IK, the higher the mechanical strength of the device. In testing, the HAMMER Energy 18×9 is classified as IK08 – almost at the highest level, which should satisfy all users looking for an armored smartphone. Grade IK08 corresponds to a 1.7 kg steel hammer or ball impact from a height of 29.5 cm on a housing (each external side of the housing is impacted).
This high value of IK can prevent us from having to change our smartphone due to many impacts, crushing or drops that may occur in everyday use.
The table below shows the IK levels and the corresponding impact strength.
IK level |
Impact energy strenght |
Equivalent of impact |
00 | 0 J | no protection |
01 | 0.15 J | Equivalent to impact of 0.2 kg mass dropped from 75 mm above impacted surface. |
02 | 0.20 J | Equivalent to impact of 0.2 kg mass dropped from 10m cm above impacted surface. |
03 | 0.35 J | Equivalent to impact of 0.2 kg mass dropped from 17.5 cm above impacted surface. |
04 | 0.50 J | Equivalent to impact of 0.2 kg mass dropped from 25 cm above impacted surface. |
05 | 0.70 J | Equivalent to impact of 0.2 kg mass dropped from 35 cm above impacted surface. |
06 | 1J | Equivalent to impact of 0.5 kg mass dropped from 20 cm above impacted surface. |
07 | 2 J | Equivalent to impact of 0.5 kg mass dropped from 40 cm above impacted surface. |
08 | 5 J | Equivalent to impact of 1.7kg mass dropped from 29.5 cm above impacted surface. |
09 | 10 J | Equivalent to impact of 5 kg mass dropped from 20 cm above impacted surface. |
10 | 20 J | Equivalent to impact of 5 kg mass dropped from 40 cm above impacted surface. |
The first model in our portfolio, whose mechanical strength is marked with the IK parameter, is HAMMER Energy 18×9 – an armoured smartphone with a 5.7-inch widescreen display.
